Punjab Public Library (PPL), Lahore being restored

The Punjab Public Library is the largest and the oldest library in Pakistan. It was built in November 8, 1884 by then-Punjab governor Lord Aitchison, who donated 75 books from his personal collection. The library was originally built in the Wazir Khan Baradari which itself was built by Nawab Wazir Khan during the era of Shah Jahan.

In 1973, the library was registered under the Societies Act, but has seen various changes and developments since then. In May this year, the library’s charge was taken over by the Higher Education Department of the Punjab government. Consequently, the library is now known as the Government Punjab Public Library. PPL, being a public library and situated in the heart of the city attracts citizens from all cross-sections of the society including students, teachers, lawyers and researchers.

The renovation of the library, which includes the repairing and preservation of old books and database has been halted due to a shortage of funds, Daily Times has learnt.

The library is chiefly run by government funds and the income generated through membership. However, the amount is very low and development work is difficult. The chief librarian said lack of resources is the main reason why development work is difficult. However, he said they have managed whatever development was possible within this meager amount.
